Important: This article provides general educational information and does not replace hands-on training, emergency services, medical care, or mental health treatment. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.

First aid begins with scene safety, calling for the right level of help, and providing care within your training.

A calm first look

Check for hazards before approaching. Use personal protective equipment when available. Check responsiveness and breathing, then call 911 for severe or uncertain emergencies.

  • Do not move someone with a possible head, neck, or back injury unless danger requires it.
  • Cool minor thermal burns with clean, cool running water; do not apply ice.
  • For severe bleeding, apply firm direct pressure and call 911.
  • For choking or CPR, use age-appropriate techniques learned in a recognized course.

Know your limits

First aid supports a person until professional care is available. When symptoms are severe, worsening, or unclear, contact emergency services or a qualified healthcare professional.
